Highways and Habitats Training

Highways & Habitats Tier 1 is an online introduction to Road Ecology – the interaction of transportation systems and infrastructure with wildlife and habitats.  Presented by the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) and the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department (VF&WD), Highways & Habitats Tier 1, gives a broad overview of the Road Ecology challenges and opportunities for transportation and wildlife professionals.  This tutorial (a mixture of slide show and videos) will take approximately one hour to view, and includes some quick and fun quizzes.

The training addresses:

  • What is Road Ecology?
  • Why do we care about highways and habitat?
  • What is habitat and habitat fragmentation? and
  • What can be done to address and improve wildlife connectivity across transportation systems and infrastructure.

VTrans and VF&WD have been conducting Highways & Habitats trainings since 2002.  The demand for this information has been so great that this online tutorial was created to share Road Ecology concepts to a much broader audience.  We hope you enjoy the tutorial.
